Protection
Saturday was interesting up at Port Royal School. There was a great turnout with Ann brining Basco, Jojo had both Gunner and Nero, Kirista brought her Dobe, William had both Kiara and Errol, Mark and Jeanette brought Cesaer and Nancy, Charles stopped by and Jermaine was there with Capone and his rottie bitch.
It was a hot day so I kept the session with Aron short. He is starting to become more and more sensitive to me, although it doesnt seem to be affecting his work with the helper, in fact he seems mostly impervious to helper pressure. I am not particularly strong with him but apparently I have to walk a fine line of the level of correction required when he is in drive and not in position or whatever, and not hurting that bond that is so strong at this time.

Obedience
It was a good night of training at Vesey St. Ann brought Basco, Jojo brought Gunner & Nero, and Frank and Anne came with Tyson.
I worked Aron on speed of response. Using the tug for drive work and quick commands for sit, down, heel, in front, with fast reward of tug & fight.
He worked really well and responded to not receiving the tug by getting faster. He wore my ass out but it was a good session.

Government Meeting - Dept of Environmental Protection
Well kids the meeting with Government was held.
It was a very good meeting. They obviously didnt change all their proposals to reflect our wishes but they recognised the validity of our concerns.
It was very much a bridge building excercise. They recognised the club as a positive addition to Bermuda's dog community.
The way is open to reduce the scope of the current breed ban given that certain issues are kept in mind.

Protection
It was a good afternoon of training at Port Royal School today. We had a full house, Jojo brought both Gunner and his new pup Nero, Ann came with Basco, William brought Errol out for some muzzle work, Jermaine came with Capone and his new bitch, Mark and Jeanette brought Nancy and Ceasar, Stanley came with his leased bitch from England and Charles brought his GSD pup.
It was very hot with humidity hovering around 80% so I kept it short with Aron today. On the first trip out I ran 2 blinds, he was very clean, call out, escape and drive, out with sit(quiet) and a reward bite to carry back to the truck. The second run out was a basic repeat.
Dawn came with Cornelious the Canon and shot some great pictures of everyone. I will see about putting a couple of each dog on this site for everyone.

Tracking
Well I have been slacking with the Blog lately.
This Sunday we had a good morning tracking, there was no protection work although a couple of us managed to get down to Smilers to shoot the shit for an hour before Jojo headed to the airport to pick up his new dobe.
Ann tracked Basco and Kay tracked Loki out at Southside.
I ran three tracks with Aron. The first was 150yds, straight, one article. The second was 150yds, 4 corners, 2 articles. The third was 200yds, one corner, one article, and I was at 20'. He ran this last one very well. He spent about 5' in the middle of the track quartering, otherwise he was right on and downed clean on the article.

Lame Dog
Aron has spent a week limping. It could have something to do with the bitework in a tree from last Sunday, or jumping and swimming from the boat on Sunday afternoon or even the 45mins he spent swimming Monday evening... I was off the island on business from Wed to Fri and he caused Ali to take him to the vet for painkillers, anti-inflamitories and X-rays. The good thing is that its much better and that all the xrays came out real clean, great hips. Another week off work and he should be good as new. Next time I'll have to be more careful with the bites 8' up a tree...

New Sleeves
My new sleeve and covers arrived Tuesday from Harddog Requsites www.harddogs.com. I now have their soft (Chomp)sleeve and a 2x intermediate bought back in 2004 and my new 3x hard sleeve. The older sleeves were in desperate need of covers and Aron is now able to crush the 2x so its time to move to something a little more challenging. I have to say that these sleeves are defintely the most comfortable as compared to gappay, bende and others.
Obedience
Tonight was a quick evening at Vesey St. Ann brought Basco. I had both dogs but Madison has been very lame on her right front for the last couple days so she got to take it easy and watch from the truck.
Aron worked well in heel. I used the dogtra collar on nick to correct for looking down or not being in position. The reward was the tug with playing, pressing etc.. He was pretty good right off the bat so there wasn't much correction. We moved to the retrieve on the flat. He was quick out and back. Ineed to work again on his sit in front. He understands the command but without an explicit hier he comes into pressing type position or into heel. We finished with bit of heeling into a voraus. That worked nicely, quick and to the hanging tug.

Tracking & Protection
Ann and I met at Southside this morning for tracking. The bicyclists were out getting ready for their road race and the course went on the driveway through the tracking fields.
I ran Aron on 3 tracks of increasing difficulty, multiple corners both rounded and sharp, one article per track, increasing length. He worked well. Playing between tracks helped settle him some and careful work on the corners improved his approach.
Madison worked a single oval track. By the time she ran her track the cyclists had started to race and they passed quite close to us. The distraction didnt help her focus and she didnt do particularly well.
We jumped back in the truck and drove to Happy Valley Park. Jojo brought Nitro down, Ann came with Basco, Johnny brought his little pit, and Smiler worked both the Red and Chocolate.

I then put on the scratch pants and worked Capone for Jermiane blinds, hold and bark and escapes, Basco for Ann, although I didnt give him the best long bite catch the first attempt but he came in real strong and fast for me on both tries, Cesaer for Mark, line bites, backups bites and hold and bark in one blind.

Sunday Tracking and protection
Ann and I met for Tracking at Southside this morning.
As both dogs were blowing past the corners last week I took a couple steps back and worked on slowing a bit, emphasising the track itself over the end and all sorts of corners.
I worked Aron on three relatively short tracks, 100-120yds each. He got his meals worth of food in the footsteps and there were approx 10 corners on each track, from sweeping curves to 135deg sharp corners. I played with him in between tracks to break the stress. He was good. I think that the multiple shorter tracks help as you get the repetition without having to wait a week between.
Madison ran a single track that Ann laid for me. She managed some moments of brilliance but there were also sections where she looked almost lost.

Protection

I started Aron with a complete Sch2 protection routine. The blinds werent completely clean, he had a geart hold and bark in the blind, his call out was fast and clean, the escape was fast and clean, out to hold and bark was good, reattack and drive was good, out again was good but he was a little slow to start the barking. Sit and back transport was good. Reattack was fast, out was good, escort was good. Long bite was good but he slowed a little in the last couple strides. Final out and escort was good.
On the second trip out we focused on his focus during the open field hold and bark. With Jermaine on a long line if he even glanced away for a split second Jojo made miss and backed up for a new revier. I approached from various angle, clapping, stomping and even eventually cracking a whip. He learned it quickly and after a couple iterations was unshakeable.
Madison ran through a blind search and a couple good hold and barks and she was done for the day. It was all just too much effort...

I worked Aron with the retrieves, on the flat and over the jump, using the Sch 3 dumbell. It was the first time he had seen it but I dont really think he noticed the difference... We finished up with a long Voraus to the ball I had set up before bringing him out. All in all I was very happy with his progress.
Madison came out full of fire... She was drivey for the dumbell, did a couple nicce retrieves, then over the jump she ran out, beautiful jump, sniffed the dumbell, turned and juped back without it. All interest for the dumbel had disappeared. Un real.

Protection
It was a good afternoon of work given that it was a holiday weekend. Families were flying kites on the school field and we all worked together well, and put on a good show for the neighbourhood. Ann brought Basco, Jojo had Gunner, Jermaine brought Capone, William brought Errol and Kiara, Charles and Dean brought the GSD puppy, and Margaret brought her puppy. Lisa came to watch with Wendy and Andrew.
I worked Aron on up to 4 blinds. The control is coming well, but he did start to skip from 2 to 4 once. I will need to emphasise the return to me next session. We worked some targeting. All in all a good training day.

Ann brought Basco and Kay brought out Loki for Easter morning tracking. Kay even hid hotdog in plastic eggs for Loki to find on her 1000yd AKC style track.
Aron ran his well although the strong wind had him 1ft to the side for about 20 ft of the 400pace track. He indicated the 3 articles very well, missed one corner but turned to other 3 well.

I returned to running a couple blinds with the tug in my hands and Aron was fast and came directly to me and on the third repetition I sent him to the next blind when he was still 10' away and he charged into a beautiful hold and bark. I worked him again on some targeting excercises.

Well I wasnt much for training this morning but I went along without dogs. The arm is a little sore, the bruising is developing etc etc. It was a good morning, bright sun, loquats on the tree were ripe. Ann worked Basco, Frank brought his puppy, Smiler worked the new puppy and Big Red and Jojo did the helper work.

Protection & Real Bites
It was a beautiful afternoon up at Port Royal School. Jojo had Gunner, Ann worked Basco, Jermaine brought Capone, William had Errol and Charles brought the puppy.
We started with an obedience session. I worked them in heeling, recalls, in motion excercises and voraus. The session wasnt too long, the heat was kicking in and I wanted some energy for protection.
Aron worked the blinds, hold and bark, call out, sit from hold and bark and escorts. I also did a couple of 2 stride attack bites from a down to help his targeting on the courage test.
I worked the second round of dogs doing the helper work. It felt really good and fluid today. The only issue was when working Errol for William. He is primarily a personal protection dog, so the work has a different focus. I was working in close, threatening, applying pressure and he managed to pull an extra foot of line from William and grab my right arm, sans sleeve. He eased the grip immediately so I pulled out and gave the inside of the sleeve. He switched over and held firm while I applied much more pressure and fight. After a couple more bites and a back up attack I stopped to check my arm.

Aron did 2 sessions, running the blinds and doing the back transport and side transport for the first time. He forged on the back transport as is to be expected, reacted well to light popping on the prong, kept his eye on the helper, hit hard on the attack and outed into a clean hold and bark. His side transport was really good, maintained eye contact with Jojo, was clean on the transport and hit with a solid strike when given the bite at the end of the transport.
Madison came out was great energy. She ran 2 blinds with a confident hold and bark, managed to hold her grip through the drive (a huge acheivement for her). A second attempt with a run out of blind 2 gave her the confidence to chase Jojo down quickly and hit with a strong bite.

Ali took the Horses down to the Jumper show at the NEC today.
Desi (Hannovarian mare) came third in the 3' jumpers with a clear round putting her into the jump off where a second clear earned her third on time.
Isabella (Belgian Warmblood mare) won the 3'3 speed class. This is a single round class and Issy went clear and won by 5 seconds.

Obedience
After a week of playing and doing some basic bits and pieces around the house, Thursday was a good training night under the lights at the NEC.
Ann came with Basco, Jojo brought Gunner and Katrina had Samson(pit).
I worked Aron on faster more accurate heeling, faster sits and downs, accurate positioning. It has been working really well when after a reward I go into the pressing green. Madison worked well. The combination of prong and food works wonders for her speed and attention.
Ann came with Basco, Jojo brought Gunner and Katrina had Samson(pit).
I worked Aron on faster more accurate heeling, faster sits and downs, accurate positioning. It has been working really well when after a reward I go into the pressing green. Great Trip - Good to be Home
Well kids it wsa a great trip for 2 weeks of vacation. That hasnt happened in a long while.
My wife and I went to London for a couple days, then headed down to Hampshire for 3 days, up to Yorkshire for a wedding then flew to Dusseldorf for 5 days in Dortmund, and then back through London to Bermuda. Really good relaxing trip.

Protection
Afternoon at Port Royal School.
Jojo & Gunner, Ann & Basco, William & Kiara & Errol, Mike & Guiness.
Jermaine, Jojo and I all suited up and I started to get back into the swing of helper work after a long hiatus from my shoulder surgery. It was a good day but man do I feel fat and out of shape, blowing hard after one dog, so by the end of the session I was finished.
Madison worked well, she ran 2 blinds did a convincing bark & hold and held firm full grip through the drive.
With Aron we continued to work the switching from Prey(green) to hold & bark(grey) to the bite(green) with the excercises(green) and the out both into blue and grey. I also worked his heeling (active blue) on the field.

Obedience & Protection
Jojo brought Gunner and Ann brought Basco and Jermaine came by to the NEC.
We started out with obedience. Aron did some really nice fus work, we worked on his attention and heeling between the other dogs. Madison came out strong, she was really wound up and it translated into some good looking work.
Aron came out the second time ready for action, he pulled me onto the field and took a full grip from open, calmly held it standing, through the sit and the down, Jojo went back in the sleeve and the fight continued. The out on the ground was calm and fairly quick. We worked the hold and bark using Helmut's method. It helped to settle him into a good rythmn and keep him from jumping so high to bark down on the Jojo's head.

Tracking
It was a good morning down at Southside, a bit of a breeze. Ann brought Basco, Kay had Loki out.
I wanted to move forward with Aron's tracking so I did two shorter tracks with a 135deg corner. I also tried using the counter rythmn to modulate his speed with the leash on the fursaver under his shoulder. Both worked quite well. He worked thoroughly and came to a stop on the corner, sat for a second on the first attempt, searched for the track with his nose and turned the corner and continued along to the end. There were only two sections with 4 peices of food on the whole track and some at the end.
Madison ran a long track with 2 90deg corners, She also only had 2 sections of 4 pieces of food. She got a bit frantic without the food, but settled and worked through it after a "No" ... "Such".

A beautiful afternoon at Port Royal School. Jojo brought Gunner, Ann had Basco, Mike was visiting again with his mixer pup, and William brought Kiara and his new GSD Errol.
We worked on a few of the excercises learned at the seminar, particularly with Aron. It was pretty cool that he responded so well to the pressing green, the three green exercises and the out to Blue, the open to grey, and the green to grey.
Madison had a much harder time, as she is very vocal even in prey (she is mixing grey and green) She had a harder time settling in green without letting go of the sleeve. In the end it was good for her as she became a little more settled and confident. I think she may improve her overall performance if I am able to clear her green in this way.

Obedience (Rain and Seminar Talk)
It was a wet and raining night at NEC. Ann, Kay, Jojo and myself spent most of the evening discussing and reviewing the information from the Raiser Seminar and how much of it can fit within our current training.
The highlight of the evening was Madison's mad dash for a rat while out for a stroll around the grounds. Her prey drive was in high gear and she got it. She thoroughly enjoyed playing with it and tossing it around.

Raiser Seminar
WOW, what else can I say. Wallace and Rhonda did a great job with all the logistics. The classrom work was phenomenal, the overheads helped crystalize the information. The practical training showed his techniques. A good time was had by all. I cant understand why anyone would have missed it.

Atlanta - Raiser Seminar
JoJo and I are in Atlanta for the Dr Raiser Seminar at South Metro Atlanta Schutzhund Club. So far we have gone tracking with Wallace Payne and had a couple club training nights, with another one tonight.
With the little explainations that I have heard so far I am really looking forward to his seminar.

Tracking
Ann and I met at Southside this morning for tracking. The wind has begun to pick up, Gale force warnings in effect.
Aron ran a fairly complicated track cleanly, indicated his article well and left almost no food behind.
Madison had a harder track with a strong wind. She did really well other than in one stop where a tight corner near the crest of a rise confused her. I held her from advancing until she worked it out and from there to the end she was excellent.

Protection
It was a good day at Port Royal School field. Ann had Basco, Jojo brought Gunner, Jermaine had Capone, Paul came with his puppy, Margaret brought both Jetta and Riggs, and Maureen worked Callum in AKC Utility.
Aron really worked well. We ran 4 blinds, showing him the helper 2 blinds out and he finds the 2nd helper in every blind. We also worked a defensive excercise, challenging over the sleeve, slowly putting the sleeve on and finishing with a high bite.
I did all the flat work from the Ob routine with Madison. She did well, recallign between the crowd, in motion commands in a group, holding her stand while someone touched her...

Full house as Ann borught Basco, Jojo came with Gunner, Paul brought his 8mos Dobe pup, and Katrina had her pitbull.
Jojo did some basic obedience work with Paul and Katrina, while Ann and I worked jumps, retrieves and the recall.
Aron was awesome. I was very impressed with his performance, he remembered the excercises from the last training day and was fast and precise. The jump was set at 20" high by 3' wide. He retrieved the tug and the dumbell.
Madison was very good also. She ran through the exercises earned her food and rarely required correction.

Aron ran his track at 20mins, there was about 20kts of wind but he did really well. THere were 2 pieces of food left on the track and he figured out the corners, the article and the wind by himself well.
Madison ran her track at closer to 30mins. She got confused again at the crest of a rise where the strong wind was creating some strange patterns, but worked through it and continued to the end. On the way back to the car she was off leash and she followed first Basco track and then Arons looking for any food that may have been left behind.

The focus for Aron was running 6 blinds under extreme distraction. I used both helpers. Jojo in the evens, and Jermaine in the odds. I started with Jermiane cracking the whip and shouting at him from #2, sent him to 1 where Jojo was waiting to do a run out, then as Jojo ran to 3 with Aron straining at the leash I sent him to 2 where Jermaine was now quietly waiting for a hold and bark. This continued for all 6 blinds with Aron wound up and wanting the 2nd blind out each time and each time being rewarded by the quiet helper.

Jumps
Ann brought Basco out and it was a great Thursday night at the NEC under the lights.
Horses had been jump schooling during the day so some of their equipment was still set in the main paddock. A nice little fence was quickly rearranged into a wide oxer (24" high 30" wide)
Aron was wound up, what a blast to work. I made him site 15' in front of the jump, then I walked over it and faced him, called him into me and into a sit in front. This progressed to having him sit while I walked over the jump, placed the tug on the ground, walked back to his side and after a few seconds gave the hup, apport commands The drive buildup from the slow movement and staring throught the tug had him starting to whine a bit as his drive just built and built. We finished when he came back super fast and sat calmly with the tug, so I fought with him for a sec and let him carry it back to the crate. The second trip out was basically repeat of the last excercise, with the addition of a retrieve on the flat, using a 3' section of 4" wood jump rail. He was a bit wild but had a blast and completed the movements at high speed.
Madison followed suit. She has always been a jumping fool. She of course knows the excercise and did it perfectly, particularly when the food bits were close at hand.
